Bancroft Elementary School’s students and staff celebrated the end of the 2017-2018 school year with a Morning Meeting assembly on Friday, June 15, 2018. Everyone had a great time singing the school’s song, watching their friends perform dance routines or read poems, listening to Principal Mrs. Leah McComsey read aloud several fifth grade students’ Bancroft Proud essays, watching the “End of the Year” movie slideshow (see link below to watch), and a movie about what Bancroft Elementary School staff do during the summer to keep reading and doing math to stay ready for school in August. Everyone left feeling extremely Bancroft Proud!
Favorite Books Field Day A Great Success
As the school year draws to a close, students enjoyed a “Famous Children’s Books Field Day.” Students moved between activity stations designated by famous children’s books. Stations included water games, tug of war, sack races, and volleyball. Students also experienced bubble stations and rest time. Thank you, Mrs. Leigh Castle, Physical Education and Health Teacher, for all the time and effort you put in to ensure that the students had a wonderful field day experience!
Kindergarten Students Visit Bancroft
Students from the Mary D. Lang Kindergarten Center who will be attending Bancroft Elementary School next year visited the school for a glimpse into first grade. They experienced first grade first-hand, starting with breakfast. Next, the kindergarten students visited first grade classrooms and spent time with current first grade students. They ended the day with a tour of the school before boarding the buses for the trip back to the Kindergarten Center. The next time they arrive at Bancroft Elementary School they will be first grade students. We can’t wait to have them as full time students!
Bancroft Celebrates Reading with Read for the Gold Winners 2017-2018
As the 2017-2018 school year ends, Bancroft Elementary School students were still diligently reading and taking Accelerated Reader (AR) comprehension quizzes. Each book has a quiz worth varying points depending on the difficulty of the book, and the students knew that they still had time to win the trophy for top class and top student for each grade level. It was an exciting year of reading and our top class and student per grade level are featured below. Please join me, Mr. David Livergood, Bancroft Elementary School’s library media specialist and AR coordinator, in congratulating these diligent and intensely committed readers on a job well done!
Bancroft Teams Earn Blue Ribbons at Chester County Reading Olympics Competition
For the seventh year in a row, all of Bancroft Elementary School’s fifth grade Reading Olympic teams earned blue ribbons – the highest award – at the Chester County Reading Olympic Competition. The teams make us all “Bancroft Proud!”
Beginning in late September, two fifth grade student Reading Olympic teams formed under the coaching of Mr. David Livergood, Reading Olympic coordinator and library media specialist. Students began reading 45 books on the official reading list. They read, took comprehension online quizzes, wrote their own questions, learned strategy, and practiced competing as teams. They even competed four times against the Bancroft Elementary School faculty team.
At the Chester County competition, the Bancroft Elementary School teams competed against teams from across Chester County. As teams, they participated in three rounds where they answered various questions about the 45 books they read. Each round contained 20 questions per team, and if the opposing team missed a question, the other team could earn a point by answering the question correctly. After all three rounds, teams with 50 points or more were awarded blue ribbons as the awards ceremony at West Chester East High School.
Green Thumb Club
The Green Thumb Club has been busy this spring as the second graders planted our first crop, and the first graders have harvested it! The students learned how to prepare the beds for planting, how deep to plant the seeds, and ultimately how to harvest vegetable properly. We’ve enjoyed the fresh spinach and lettuce from our garden that the woman in the cafeteria have prepared for us.
As soon as the early crops were picked, the members of the Green Thumb Club planted the summer crops of tomatoes, peppers, squash, and cucumbers. Bancroft Elementary School families will take on the responsibility of caring for the garden during the summer months. Food will either be taken home and eaten or donated to the Kennett Food Cupboard.
All of the students agree that growing your own food is fun and easy, too!
