Bancroft Elementary School celebrated World Down Syndrome Day on the Friday before Spring Break. Students participated in a “Rock Your Socks” event by wearing fun, colorful socks. Wearing the socks served as a reminder that every person is unique, every person is special and every person needs to be included.
Bancroft Earns All Blue Ribbons at Chester County Reading Olympic Competition
All three of Bancroft Elementary School’s fifth grade Reading Olympic teams won blue ribbons – the highest award – at the Chester County Reading Olympic competition. The Bancroft Brilliant Brains, Dragon Hurricanes, and Lightning Bolts competed with teams from other southern Chester County schools. Bancroft Elementary School’s teams demonstrated that they understood the 45 different books they read since September by answering comprehension questions about the books.
Reading Olympics is a reading incentive program intended to encourage students to read books from a variety of literary genres and answer comprehension questions in a team competition. Each team participates in three rounds of questioning. Teams have 20 seconds to provide the correct answer before the other team can answer and steal the point. By working as a team, students learn how to work cooperatively and depend on each other. Some students actually read all 45 books on the list, while others read a portion of the total 45. But everyone commits to be an expert on at least some of the books.
Local Meterologist and Reporter Visit Bancroft
First grade students at Bancroft Elementary School had a BLAST learning about meteorology and traffic from FOX 29’s Sue Serio and Bob Kelly! What a fun way to start off our weather unit by having a meteorologist talk about clouds, precipitation and forecasting. Tied together with our social studies “community helpers” unit, Mr. Kelly taught us about the importance of reporting news, and to “work hard” to become what we want to be in life. Thanks Fox 29!
Bancroft First Grade Science is a Blast
Over the past month, the first grade students at Bancroft Elementary School have been studying various landforms. They should be able to tell you about mountains, valleys, the plains, and much more. The students have thoroughly enjoyed reading and writing about our Earth’s land and water. During the study they walked around the school property to look for signs of erosion.
As a concluding project, each first grade class made volcanoes. They then demonstrated the main eruption with soda and Mentos outside, and watched the lava flow eruptions in our classrooms. Everyone had a BLAST!
