Bancroft Elementary School’s second grade students read Jamaica Louise James, by Amy Hest, in their Storytown reading book. This story is about a young girl, Jamaica, and her grandmother who work in the subway station. In order to brighten up the colorless and empty subway walls, Jamaica draws pictures of the many people her grandmother describes to her. Besides bringing life to the subway station, it also makes all the real people of Jamaica’s drawings happy to see themselves through the artwork. The second grade students did the same thing as Jamaica, but for Bancroft Elementary School staff by drawing a different staff member and hanging them up to brighten Bancroft’s walls.
